Prof. Hon Ki TSANG

Interim Dean of Engineering, CUHK

Professor Hon Ki Tsang was born in Hong Kong and studied Engineering at the University of Cambridge, receiving the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in 1987. He received the PhD degree, also from the University of Cambridge, in 1991. He was a researcher and SERC Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Physics, University of Bath between September 1990 to September 1993, when he returned to Hong Kong to take up a tenure-track Lecturer (with academic title of Assistant Professor) position at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. He started the research on silicon photonics at CUHK in 2000. He worked in industry (at Bookham Technology plc based near Oxford, UK) to develop and commercialize the technology of silicon photonics from December 2001 to June 2003. He returned to CUHK in 2003, and was promoted to Professor that same year. He served as Chairman of the Department of Electronic Engineering between 2010 and 2016. He is currently the Wei Lun Professor of Electronic Engineering and the Interim Dean of Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Tsang’s research has concentrated on silicon photonics for high-speed optical communications, 3D imaging and integrated quantum photonics. He has published over 260 peer reviewed journal papers. His research papers have received over 11700 citations with an H-index of 53 (Google Scholar). He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of Optica (formerly called the Optical Society, OSA).
